Gilly and
Stine

My name is Muldunstine.  I go by Stine.  I will give you a short history of my half-bother,
McGillicuyty (Gilly) and me.

Gilly and I were born in western Montana where we lived on a small ranch.   In October of
2000 our present human care taker “Rich” came and got us and brought us to northern
North Dakota.  It was cold there during the first winter.  It was 20 degrees below zero for
several weeks.  However, we had a nice warm stall and plenty of food so we were
comfortable.”

During the time in North Dakota, Rich would come and bother us a lot.  We never had that
in Montana.  At first we didn’t like it.  We did not understand what was going on.  Rich never
hurt us.  He would come by and pet us, hook a rope to our halters and make us walk with
him.  This didn’t make sense at first but as time went on we started to look forward to it.

The time then came when he stated to stick this piece of metal in our mouth and instead of
walking beside us he would walk behind us and pulled our heads in different directions.  It
was a slow process because we had to teach him what we needed in order to understand.
Over time we started to communicate better and work as a team.

In the meantime we started moving south to a warmer climate.  We lived in Nebraska for a
while and now we live in Colorado.  This really seems like home and we have our friends
here that will tell their own story later.

Back to the communication!  Over time different challenges were given to us.  This was a
slow process, we learned how to pull weight behind us and then he hooked up this
contraption with wheels and expected us to pull it around.  Eventually he started to ride in
the contraption and then one day he hook Gilly and me together with a contraption and we
needed to start learning how to work together and pull.

We are now very comfortable working as a team.  Most of the time, we understand our
human and we found our true calling in life.  That is allowing others to climb into the
contraption behind us and give them a ride.  We know that they enjoy it and we get lots of
pets and kind words from everyone when we do this.

Our human is starting to pair us with new donkeys.   It seems like Gilly and Bo are paired
together and Buck and I get paired up.  Bo and Buck don't know all the tricks of the trade
and Gilly and I need to get them to follow us.  I think our human wants us to start working
with these other donkeys so he has a substitute if something happens to Gilly or myself.

I believe there is more to this whole thing also.  I see the human working on another
contraption.  He talks about a four-up team.   I am assuming he is talking about 4 donkeys
working together.  I am not sure what he is talking about but he said we will be doing it by
next summer.

We will have to wait and see.  Check in ofter to see what we are doing.  Hee-Haa

We hope to see you on the TRAIL sometime.
This is a picture of Gilly and Stine at the Akron Home Grown Carnival in 2005.
This was their first outing around these kind of noises and this many people.
They were professionals from the start and were happy to get all the attention
that they did.

The cart in the picture is now the training and exercise cart and the have new
harnesses and wagon that fits their wonderful nature.
